A popular comedy show is getting a sequel series from Netflix.
A Different World is a sitcom series that serves as a spin-off of The Cosby Show. It aired for six seasons on NBC from 1987 and 1993, with the cast including Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable, Marisa Tomei as Maggie Lauten, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, and Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Cleofis Wayne.
It was first reported that a sequel to A Different World was in development back in 2024, with Netflix then giving it a pilot order earlier this year. Now, per Deadline, the A Different World sequel has received an official continuation to series. The show will have ten half-hour episodes.
What do we know about Netflix’s A Different World sequel show?
“The show will center on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of Hillman College’s finest, Dwayne Wayne (played by Kadeem Hardison in the original series) and Whitney Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), as she enters her freshman year at their HBCU alma mater and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape,” Deadline’s description of the plot reads. “She sets out to build her own legacy – while having the time of her life – alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.”
Felicia Pride will serve as the showrunner for the series as well as an executive producer, while Debbie Allen will direct three episodes, including the premiere. Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Mandy Summers, and Tom Werner also serve as executive producers.
The cast further includes Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and Kennedi Reece as Hazel.
Pride said in a statement, “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life. I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”
