Netflix has officially announced the casting of Golden Globe nominee Michelle Monaghan (True Detective) in the leading role of Shawn Levy‘s upcoming TV show about a high school ice hockey team.
This marks Monaghan’s latest collaboration with the streamer after starring in the 2022 miniseries Echoes. She most recently starred in the latest season of HBO’s The White Lotus, which was set in Thailand. She’s currently attached to reprise her role as Jessica Morgan in Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming The Family Plan 2 movie.
What do we know about Netflix’s new hockey series?
“The series takes place in the small working-class town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, where the high school hockey team has been churning out state championships and NHL stars for decades with their legendary Coach ‘Sully’ Sullivan at the helm. When a bus crash claims the lives of several players and Sully himself, the town looks to Harper Sullivan — Coach Sully’s widow — to coach a new team of battered and broken young men,” reads the official synopsis. “What unfolds is the hopeful and unforgettable story of an underdog team that comes together to galvanize their town, reclaim their way of life, and turn their shared grief into an unstoppable superpower.”
The untitled eight-episode hockey series hails from creator Nick Naveda (My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward) and showrunner Bridget Bedard (Ramy, Transparent). Besides Levy, Dan Levine (All the Light We Cannot See) and Robert Atwood (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) are also executive producing for 21 Laps, along with Bedard and director Trey Edward Shults. Moera Ainai (The Perfect Couple) is also serving as a producer.

With its visceral sports backdrop and a story grounded in deep humanity, we cannot wait to bring this show to a global audience.”
