Ant-Man Abuses His Power in the Most Hilarious Way Possible

While Ant-Man has become something of a comic relief character in the current landscape of Marvel media, he was originally a jerk who was condescending towards his wife and fellow Avengers members as well as reckless with his intellect, culminating in his misguided creation of Ultron. Now, it seems fans can add another character flaw to the list as Ant-Man has been seen abusing his powers to satiate his own laziness–though to be fair, it is pretty hilarious.

Hank Pym aka Ant-Man is a brilliant scientist who developed a way for humans to shrink and grow to incredible lengths without ripping their bodies apart in the process through the use of his own Pym Particles. Using the particles he invented, Hank Pym turned himself into Ant-Man and Giant-Man and joined the Avengers to use his power for the greater good–that is, when he wasn’t using them in a non-heroic capacity.

In Avengers #5 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Avengers are gathered at one of Tony Stark’s properties that served as a base of operations for the team following a recent rampage from the Hulk. The Avengers discuss the Hulk and how they can bring him back under their supervision as they believe him to be too dangerous to be left unchecked. When the meeting is over, Ant-Man looks at his wife the Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne, and says, “I’m too tired to walk, Jan! Let’s shrink down and I’ll summon my flying ants!”.

The fact that Ant-Man uses his powers to manipulate a couple of ants to allow him to stand on their backs and fly him out of the Avengers compound after shrinking down to the size of an ant himself rather than simply walking out of the building is absolutely hilarious. A superhero is only as good as how they use their powers, and in this scenario, Ant-Man is totally abusing his abilities for a free ride on some mind-controlled ants. While it could be argued that this is no different from Spider-Man using his web-shooters or Tony Stark using his Iron Man suit to quickly travel from one location to another, this instance seems like it would be almost more work than just walking, and his declaration of doing this just because he is too tired to walk just makes the whole situation all the more ridiculous.

When compared to creating a murderous A.I. system like Ultron or even being abusive towards his wife, using ants to travel out of sheer laziness is pretty low on the list of Ant-Man’s morally grey characteristics and actions. Though as ludicrous as this scene may be, Ant-Man gave himself those powers and as long as he doesn’t use them for villainy, he can do with them whatever he pleases including this hilarious display of abusing his powers for one of the most selfish and lazy reasons imaginable.
