Elden Ring: Why Ensha Of The Royal Remains Wants To Kill You

[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Elden Ring.]

Ensha of the Royal Remains, one of Elden Ring's most mysterious and cool-looking NPCs, tries to kill the player with seemingly no reason or warning. Before the attack, Ensha spends the entire game leaning against a wall in the Roundtable Hold, silently observing the protagonist. Needless to say, information on Ensha is difficult to find, and can only be gleaned through hints dropped by other NPCs. After all, lore is often kept secret in Elden Ring, even for major characters. However, with enough research and a little imagination, Ensha's actions start to make sense.

Ensha only invades the player's world once they obtain one-half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and return to Roundtable Hold. Even on the edge of death, Ensha remains silent, but his master, Gideon Ofnir, does offer some insight. He suggests that Ensha is basically his servant and that Ensha attacked the player's Tarnished without Gideon's permission. The description of Ensha's armor, which refers to him as an adherent of Sir Gideon, further illuminates their relationship.

All this insinuates that Gideon previously ordered Ensha to retrieve the Haligtree Secret Medallion, so Ensha presumably attacks to steal it from the player; whether Gideon is actually in the dark about it is unclear. Probable cause has been established, but there are more pieces of the puzzle scattered throughout Elden Ring's massive map of the Lands Between. An NPC named Albus, who is disguised as a pot in Liurnia of the Lakes, holds the medallion piece that Ensha wants. Albus tells the player that his village is in ruins, that "the cursemongers have destroyed everything," and that the medallion is regarded as a sort of relic by his race, the Albinaurics. He then begs the player to keep the medallion away from the cursemongers.

A certain Finger Reader Crone by Raya Lucaria helps fill in the gaps: "The all-hearing slaughtered, but alas, it was for naught. But all you need do, is snatch it from the big pot." The all-hearing could refer to Ensha, or his master as a variation of Sir Gideon Ofnir the All-Knowing. Regardless, Ensha has been violently searching for the Haligtree Secret Medallion for some time now, at least partially under Gideon's supervision, unfortunately for Elden Ring's human-looking kind of Albinaurics. Ensha's reason for seeking the medallion is still frustratingly unclear, and any personal motivation he might have remains hidden.

After the player uses the Haligtree Secret Medallion, Gideon offers a bit more information about Ensha. He congratulates the tarnished, and tells them, "You've made more of yourself than Ensha has." It's already clear Ensha wants the medallion, but Gideon insinuates his true goal is reaching the Haligtree. The phrasing suggests Ensha acts of his own accord, which would explain why he attacks the tarnished without Gideon's knowledge. However, Gideon schemes endlessly throughout the game, and lying about ordering Ensha's attack to remain in the player's good graces is in character for him. Gideon also shows great interest in learning about the Haligtree; as an information broker, he has every reason to send Ensha to do his dirty work. With both scenarios lacking evidence, Ensha's true motivation remains one of Elden Ring's biggest mysteries, one both Ensha and Gideon carry to their graves.
