Kim Raver teases what viewers can expect in Grey's Anatomy season 19. The show's recent finale changed the status quo in a major way, with Grey Sloan Memorial's residency program losing its accreditation. Several doctors leave, at least temporarily, with Meredith positioned as the only one who can save the hospital. This has led to a lot of questions about what Grey's Anatomy season 19 will look like when it premieres in October. The teaching scenes are a major part of the show, so it's hard to imagine it working without them.
Additionally, the fates of two major characters are up in the air following the finale. In arguably its most shocking scene, Teddy (Raver) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) flee Seattle after Bailey is informed Owen provided sick veterans with the medication needed to die with dignity. With the two last seen on a plane with their kids, it's unclear how exactly the characters will return in Grey's Anatomy season 19, especially since they could lose their medical licenses and even wind up in jail.
In an interview with People, Raver teased what's to come when Grey's Anatomy returns in the fall. She said in part, "Season 19 is going to be insane. It's like the bomb exploding and what is the fallout going to be? What show can pull off 19 years?" Raver was also asked about Teddy and Owen and if they'll be back in season 19:
I mean, look, I hope that's not the way we're ending it. There is still a lot to be told with these two. But you never know. You have to keep everyone sort of wanting to tune in at the end of September. I just think there are still stories to be told.
While Raver avoids confirming Teddy and Owen will return in Grey's Anatomy season 19, it seems likely. For one, there's been no indication Raver or McKidd is leaving the show, and that sort of casting news often comes out immediately after a season finale. Additionally, both actors have been a part of Grey's Anatomy for many years – McKidd for fourteen seasons and Raver for eight. Though the show has no problem killing off characters when actors exit, there's usually closure of some kind, especially for those who have been on the series as long as Teddy and Owen. It would be quite surprising for Grey's Anatomy to end their journeys as they currently stand.
As Raver says, there's a lot more story left for Teddy and Owen. After their timing being off for decades, they've only recently settled into married life with their children, which offers a whole host of storytelling opportunities. Grey's Anatomy could also follow the inevitable legal battle when Owen and Teddy are either found or choose to return. The challenge will be making it different from Meredith's fight for her medical license back in season 16, though the show will likely find a way to do so. Hopefully, Raver and her castmates will have more to say about Grey's Anatomy season 19 in the coming months.
