Moon Knight's Identities Have A Secret Deal To Keep His Body Alive

[Collection]

Warning: contains spoilers for Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #2!

Marvel's Moon Knight has four separate individual personalities within the body of Marc Spector - and his four alters have a plan to keep the body of their host safe. One of the most prominent superheroes with Dissociative Identity Disorder, Spector is used to battling ancient evils and supernatural supervillains. But in Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #2, the Fist of Khonshu reveals a unique strategy for maintaining Marc's health.

It is important to note that Moon Knight's many personalities were initially portrayed in comics as simple secret identities for the character to use while fighting crime. Steven Grant was a way to find connections with the rich and famous, while Jake Lockley was a streetwise cabbie who kept his ear to the ground (and built a fearsome reputation). Only later in the character's history were these alternate identities written as actual, separate personalities, and Moon Knight's DID was officially solidified in Marvel Comics canon.

In Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #2, the series continues adhering to its anthology roots with the story "A Hard Day's Knight." Written by David Pepose with art by Leonardo Romero & Chris Sotomayor, the tale begins as a wounded Moon Knight (in his Mr. Knight identity) walks into a diner and takes a table, his suit with noticeable bloodstains. His other alters, along with the God Khonshu, are already seated, but Moon Knight is the only person in the diner who can see or hear them. "First order of business - who's responsible for the knife wound?" asks Mr. Knight. "You know you're supposed to get stuff like that patched up before you pass the reins."

Moon Knight's alters cannot always remain aware when other personalities take control of Marc's body. While some like Steven Grant are good fighters but often seen at art galleries more than alleyways, some like Jake Lockley are brutal and perhaps more prone to injury during his battles. Since all the personalities were created to keep Marc safe (either physically or emotionally), they share a common goal, and thus a way to make sure his body is patched up before taking control.

Moon Knight and his alters' more recent stories revolve around the interactions of his personalities; each of them want to keep Marc healthy. His severe mental health issues are part of his character, but so too is his desire to get better and change. In this way, the alters' plan to keep Moon Knight safe could very well be his own mind's attempt to heal.
