Patton Oswalt Catfishes His Son In I Love My Dad Trailer

[Collection]

Just in time for Father's Day comes the trailer for the dark comedy I Love My Dad, where Patton Oswalt plays a father catfishing his own son. The indie film premiered at this year's SXSW Festival in Austin. There it won the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature and the Audience Award, although Screen Rant's own I Love My Dad review was somewhat more mixed.

Released by Magnolia Pictures, the trailer shows Oswalt as Chuck, a father desperately trying to reconnect with his troubled son Franklin (James Morosini), who's just left a mental health facility after a suicide attempt and blocked Chuck on social media. Chuck decides to pretend to be a waitress (Claudia Sulewski) named Becca online, only for his son to unexpectedly fall in love with the fake profile. The film is also written and directed by Morosini, based on his real life experiences with his own father. Check out the trailer below:

Oswalt is no stranger to playing fathers failing to connect to their children-- he recently voiced one such father as the villainous MODOK on the shortlived Hulu comedy, who had troubles relating to his two children during his separation from his wife. The comedian has appeared in a wide range of projects and genres, most often of the cult-favorite and comic book variety. He hasn't had played many leading roles outside of voicing Remy the rat in Ratatouille, and his turns in Big Fan and Young Adult, the tones of which this more closely looks to resemble. I Love My Dad co-stars Lil Rel Howery, Amy Landecker, Ricky Velez, and Rachel Dratch and will premiere in theaters August 5, 2022, and On Demand August 12, 2022.
