Fans awaiting Bethesda's latest, Starfield, have been given a sneak peek at the game and it has Fallout 4's greatest feature: settlement building. Bethesda gave fans a 15-minute-long look into Starfield during Summer Game Fest 2022 as a part of the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, with a special appearance from the game's director, Todd Howard. Starfield's extended gameplay demonstration was one of the biggest reveals from this year's Summer Game Fest.
Starfield was initially announced in 2018 at E3. More information was dropped again at E3 in 2021. After initially being planned for release in November 2022, Starfield's delay was predicted by Resetera leaks, a suspicion that was confirmed in May when the release was pushed back to some time in 2023. The gameplay trailer that dropped at Summer Game Fest offered a chance to learn a lot more about the game and the different gameplay features.
One of the features shown in the Starfield trailer that has many fans excited is the settlement building that is similar to that in Fallout 4. Building settlements and connecting supply chains can be a large aspect of Fallout 4, and many players are still sharing their creations almost seven years after the initial release of the game. It is a way for players to express their creativity and management skills in a game that usually focuses more on survival.
The expanded and improved settlement building from Fallout 4 will let players choose where on Starfield's 1,000 explorable planets to build. While Fallout 4's settlement building was fun and interesting, it was still clunky and sometimes temperamental. These mechanics could, however, be vastly improved by user-created mods. Starfield's settlement system looks far more polished and refined. It appears players can place a settlement wherever they'd like in Starfield, unlike in Fallout 4 where structures had to be placed in pre-determined areas. From what was shown in the gameplay clips, there is also a top-down view that will make placement easier. A hiring system will also let players manage the NPCs in their various settlements.
Along with the settlement or outpost building, Starfield is also allowing players to build their own spaceships. The ships are completely customizable with different modules and parts. Starfield's extensive open-world RPG mechanics will even let players modify the engines and weapons systems, with the custom ships being fully flyable. Starfield is taking one of the best aspects of Fallout 4, the settlement building, and improving it in new and exciting ways. Players will be able to express their creativity more than ever in the upcoming Bethesda release. Hopefully, Starfield ends up delivering on the promises that it has made in the Summer Game Fest 2022 trailer.
