Disney's Plans For Encanto Movie Future May Be Revealed Soon

Disney teases that details on the future of Encanto may be revealed soon. Ever since Encanto was released in late 2021, the movie has welcomed immense popularity and acclaim. Its breakout song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” in particular became one of the biggest Disney has released in years, gaining success on TikTok as well as contributing to the film’s overall Oscar nominations. Encanto ultimately won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, though it was also nominated for score and song.

According to recent press, Encanto will not be a standalone hit. Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to Encanto as part of a franchise, hinting at a future for Mirabel and the entire Madrigal family. More recently, one of the film's stars, Adassa (who voices Dolores in the film), made a cryptic comment wherein she said Encanto is “preparing for its next amazing phase.” While Chapek’s phrasing was evidence enough for more Encanto-related content, Adassa’s own tease further suggested future projects are actively on the horizon. However, nothing has been revealed as of yet.

The wait for Encanto news may come to an end soon, hints a recent tweet from Scott Gustin. According to the post, Disney will be hosting an Encanto panel on September 10 during its D23 Expo titled “A Celebration of Disney Animation’s ‘Encanto’.” The Premiere Stage panel will include the creative team behind the film as well as, according to Disney, “a few surprises.

While the specifics of said surprises are still left incredibly vague, it seems likely that they will have something to do with the upcoming Encanto franchise content. Disney will have to deliver some new information at this panel for anything to count as a surprise for a film that has already been released. The panel will likely still feature tidbits about the behind-the-scenes making of Encanto, of course, but with multiple “surprises” promised, hopefully at least some new light on the franchise's future will be revealed.

The nature of the franchise's next moves is of course still left incredibly up in the air. A feature-length Encanto sequel is certainly a possibility, although given that less than a year has passed since the first film's release, any full-length project in development would probably debut pretty far down the line. Alternatively, the Encanto team could do something like Frozen did and release a short with the main characters before releasing a full-length sequel. Given the Broadway star power behind Encanto songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, an stage musical is certainly a distinct possibility as well. Whatever the case may be for the impending Encanto franchise, the talks of the September panel indicate that an answer is soon to come.
