Last Of Us Part 1 To Challenge Pros With Permadeath & Speedrun Modes

The remake for The Last of Us Part 1 will have new experiences for veteran players with new permadeath and speedrun modes. The Last of Us Part 1 was officially announced during the 2022 Summer Game Fest and has received a bit of a tepid reception from long-time fans dubious of its necessity. This notion left many to wonder if the Last of Us Part 1 Remake's $70 price would be worth the value.

Since launching in 2013, The Last of Us has proven to be quite the tough act to follow for Naughty Dog. Joel and Ellie’s captivating journey across a post-pandemic fungal zombie-infested U.S. has been the source of many memorable experiences, both wholesome and tragic. Couple this compelling narrative with some intense survival-shooter gameplay, and it’s easy to see why many remember The Last of Us so fondly. Its follow-up, The Last of Us Part 2, would significantly improve the gameplay of its predecessor and arguably surpassed the first in terms of critical reception. However, despite these improvements, Last of Us 2’s controversial narrative would sharply divide the fanbase. Due to the reveal for the Last of Us Part 1 remake leaking before its unveiling at the 2022 Summer Games Fest, it's unfortunately struggled to gain momentum amongst its divided fans.

PlayStation’s official YouTube channel recently showcased a 10-minute trailer of what new features fans can expect in the upcoming remake of The Last of Us Part 1. Alongside improved graphics and enemy AI, Last of Us Part 1 will include new permadeath and speedrun modes. Permadeath mode was introduced in Last of Us Part 2 and will function similarly in the Part 1 remake. At the beginning of the game, players will choose whether death sends them back to the start of a chapter, an act, or, for the hardcore players, the beginning of the game itself. If the player dies, they'll have to restart from the beginning of whatever time they selected. Upon death, players will receive a status screen detailing the cause of death and how long they survived. The Last of Us Part 1 gameplay demo also revealed an official speedrun mode. This mode will feature a helpful little clock on the upper right showing where the player is in the game and how much time has passed. It is currently unknown if there will be leaderboards or any unlockable rewards for quicker completion.

While the initial lukewarm reaction to The Last of Us Part 1 is understandable, it's also unfortunate, given that the remake provides a slew of features that would have been well-received under better circumstances. Along with permadeath and speedrun, Last of Us Part 1 is set to receive a render view mode, model viewer mode, and an evolved photo mode. There will also be a slew of unlockable cosmetic items and implementation of accessibility options made famous from the Last of Us Part 2. However, a significant drawback to value is that the remake retains the same combat gameplay as the original, which is unfortunate as newer mechanics from Last of Us Part 2, like dodging, would have been a welcome inclusion.

With permadeath, speedruns, and more, The Last of Us Part 1 seems to have a fair amount to offer over its predecessor. However, the cruel fact remains that the original Last of Us is less than 10 years old, and its experience is still fresh in the minds of its players. Ultimately, it will be up to the fans to decide if the features offered in The Last of Us Part 1 warrant the price of admission. Hopefully, the decision is one both Naughty Dog and the fans will be happy with.
