The two Minecraft spinoffs, Minecraft Legends and Minecraft Dungeons, both have their own unique experience to offer, but each one might be right for different players. The two are wildly different, and especially since Minecraft Legends has yet to release, it's tough to say whether one is truly better than the other. Minecraft Legends does not currently have a solid release date, but publisher Xbox Game Studios currently has a 2023 window.
Despite releasing 11 years ago, Minecraft is the single biggest and most popular video game available today, and part of the reason why is its cathartic simplicity. Players can relax, gather resources, and construct anything they can imagine for hours on end in a soothing landscape that they can reshape however they wish. Few games do building better than Minecraft, but over the years, the series has expanded to include other genres. Minecraft Dungeons is a roguelike dungeon-crawler set in the world of classic Minecraft, but with new combat mechanics and features. Recently, another spinoff called Minecraft Legends was announced, and it promises a new adventure with its own unique style of gameplay, far different from what the series has done so far.
There's nothing stopping players from playing and enjoying both Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends, but their different genres mean that each one will appeal to some but not others. Deciding which to play or even which to play first is ultimately a matter of personal preference. Both games have their strengths and weaknesses, so players who value certain things above all else in a video game - and especially those getting back into Minecraft after not playing in years - may want to do some research on both Dungeons and Legends and see which one matches their preferences before making their choice, and perhaps watch some gameplay of each online when Minecraft Legends comes out.
Minecraft Legends is an action strategy game set in an Overworld where the various mobs all live in harmony, from Villagers to Creepers. When the Piglins of the Nether arrive to disrupt that balance and spread corruption throughout the land, players must gather allies in order to drive them back and save their world. Though the full details of the game are unknown, it looks like it will have a heavy focus on combat in horde-style battles akin to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity or other similar Dynasty Warriors-style games. Players will control their own character along with some of Minecraft's best tameable and hostile mobs in strategic battles against the forces of the Nether. Minecraft's famous building mechanics also look like they'll make a return in some form, so players shouldn't have to miss out on them while playing Minecraft Legends.
However, large battles like the ones Minecraft Legends looks like it will have mean a lot to do and a lot to keep track of. They may quickly become hectic, and could overwhelm players unused to this style of combat. It also looks like the building mechanics won't be the same as classic Minecraft; instead of the player placing blocks, they appear to direct Allays to do it for them, which means that they may only be able to choose from pre-made structures and not have as much freedom. There's also the possibility that Minecraft Legends won't be an open-world game, leaving players unable to explore the rare and fun biomes of Minecraft. Though it's still possible that it is open-world, the focus on combat and the altered building mechanics indicate that the battles could instead be confined to only a few different areas.
Minecraft Dungeons is a roguelike game set in the various dimensions of Minecraft. A small Illager that calls themselves Arch-Illager has taken control of the Overworld under the influence of the Orb of Dominance, and players must quest through various dungeons in order to end his reign of terror. The game's roguelike elements mean that the dungeons are procedurally generated, so players can go through each level over and over again and have it be fresh almost every time. The wide variety of weapons, armor, and helpful items mean that they can play and fight however they'd like. Minecraft Dungeons also has crossplay and multiplayer, so players can journey through its various dungeons with their friends no matter what platform each of them play on.
Of course, Minecraft Dungeons has its downsides, and some of them relate to its upsides. The procedural generation means that getting the right gear and weapons for any given playstyle is sometimes a matter of luck more than anything, and the wide variety can make it tough to decide on one. There also isn't much substance to the game; the story of the Arch-Illager and the Orb of Dominance was good in the base game, but the DLC quickly wore it out by using only the Orb's shards without introducing any new real story elements or antagonists. Minecraft Dungeons may be fun, but it has little to offer in the way of plot or narrative. Classic Minecraft doesn't have an actual story or plot, either, but it was never supposed to. It's a game focused on resource gathering, base building, and crafting, so it doesn't need a plot, and the fact that it doesn't have one is an asset since it means that players can create whatever story they want around it. Minecraft Dungeons, on the other hand, is a narrative-driven game, so its weak story is more of a liability than Minecraft's lack of one.
Though all of its gameplay aspects still haven't been revealed, it looks like Minecraft Legends will appeal to players who enjoy more complicated games, and who put value in combat mechanics and strategic battles where they can utilize their various allies' strengths in order to achieve victory. Hopefully, Mojang will learn from its Minecraft Dungeons plot mistake and make the story more compelling, with plenty of secrets for Minecraft Legends players to find without being overly complicated, so that those who value plot won't be disappointed. It looks to offer a richer gameplay experience with more of classic Minecraft than Dungeons has, so players who would enjoy that may want to follow Legends closely.
Minecraft Dungeons may appeal more to players who are looking for a simpler experience with casual gameplay. Those who value replayability and want to be able to reacclimate themselves with the game easily after some time of not playing it may enjoy it due to its simplistic nature. Just like the original Minecraft, it can also be relaxing and soothing, so it may be good for players looking for a game to unwind with. Neither Minecraft Dungeons nor Minecraft Legends is right for everyone, but both of these titles from Minecraft's catalog of spinoff games have plenty to offer, so players should consider each and pick which one best suits them.
