Stargirl’s Brec Bassinger Wants to Do an Arrowverse Musical Episode

DC's Stargirl actress Brec Bassinger says she wants a musical episode of the Arrowverse series. On the show, Bassinger plays Courtney Whitmore, a teenager who becomes a superhero after she discovers Starman's Cosmic Staff and begins channeling its power. The series, which also stars Luke Wilson, Joel McHale, Yvette Monreal, Amy Smart, Anjelika Washington, Nelson Lee, Christopher James Baker, Trae Romano, and Hunter Sansone, has aired for two seasons so far on The CW, with the network renewing Stargirl season 3 for late 2022.

The musical episode is a grand television tradition that has produced some of classic shows' most memorable episodes. Some more realistic series have bent over backward to find ways to include a musical episode, like the medical drama Grey's Anatomy and comedy Scrubs, which both used brain trauma to induce hallucinations of musical numbers. However, shows that take place in more fantastical universes do it even more frequently, including Batman: The Brave & The Bold, which featured Neil Patrick Harris as DC villain The Music Meister, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which featured a musical demon lurking around Sunnydale in the episode "Once More with Feeling."

On Twitter, a superhero fan shared a tweet celebrating the superhero universe embracing the musical form, with stills from various projects including Rogers: The Musical from the MCU series Hawkeye. When another fan commented that they want a Stargirl musical episode next, Bassinger saw fit to respond. She quote tweeted the post, saying that "we have been campaigning for this since the beginning." Check out Bassinger's tweet below:

Bassinger does have some experience in the realm of musical media, having appeared in 12 episodes of the surprisingly long-running Nickelodeon reboot series School of Rock. When she says "we", it is unclear who exactly agrees with her proposal. There aren't many cast members of hers who have experience singing publicly, however Stargirl's executive producer Greg Berlanti has no problem introducing musical episodes, as he has done so in the past with multiple series including Riverdale, which has featured the music of Carrie: The Musical and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

There is also a precedent for musical episodes within the Arrowverse. A previous crossover between The Flash and Supergirl reunited Glee co-stars Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist with guest star Darren Criss for another musical brought on by The Music Meister. DC's Stargirl could easily recreate this kind of approach in the future, as long as the cast is game to do it.
