The Ghostbusters' Deaths Flipped an Iconic Movie Line

When the Ghostbusters cross the wrong spirits, their deaths find them end in the afterlife where one of their members flips one of the franchises' most memorable lines. When the Ghostbusters interfere with mob business from beyond the grave, the undead gangsters retaliate with one possessed and the other members murdered in front of the Firehouse. While their bodies float inside the Ecto-1 at the bottom of the East River, their spirits search the afterlife where they continue to oppose their newest enemies' efforts with the special help of Peter Venkman whose unique status has made him like a god, in a spiritual sense of course.

In Ghostbusters: Other Side the Ghostbusters interrupt a meeting between two rival gangs where a mob enforcer forcibly takes over Peter's body. While the spirit fails to negotiate the release of any trapped crew members, Peter's displaced spirit disappears elsewhere and leaves his body non-responsive when the ghost makes a premature exodus. In their pursuit to understand the situation and save their absent teammate, the Ghostbusters are tricked into a trap where they are killed by a battalion of armed spirits, led by the same ghost who possesses Peter's body yet again. Ray, Egon, and Winston end up in purgatory where their reputation precedes them as they are pursued by angry spirits acting on the orders of others. When they appear to face the wrath of a literal demon, they are saved last minute by Peter who showcases abilities unlike anything he was capable of before.

In Ghostbusters: Other Side #3 by writer Keith Champagne and artist Tom Nguyen, Peter is seen alongside famous political figures like Elliot Ness, Jelly Bryce, and J. Edgar Hoover who reveal that their real enemies are the spirits of infamous gangsters who're running an illegal operation of smuggling ghosts out of purgatory. With the others acting on benevolent orders, the God Squad and the Ghostbusters team up but face another complicit demon. They insist that Peter help de-escalate the situation which he happily agrees as he flies away. Both Ray and Egon address the reality of Peter's new abilities which include flight and super strength and Egon theorizes it has to do with his soul being displaced instead of killed. This unique happenstance finds him in purgatory where he exists as a cosmic loophole, unbound by the supernatural physics that deny other spirits the abilities he gruesomely wields.

If Egon's theory is correct, which it rarely isn't, this would make Peter something akin to a god in the afterlife which brings to mind their memorable encounter with Gozer the Gozerian in 1984's Ghostbusters. Although it was Ray whose answer to Gozer's question almost killed them, it's Peter's status as a spiritual Superman that gives him an unusual advantage. The Ghostbusters' threat has often been tied to their technology, which they do not have in this situation, leaving them defenseless against their enemies' forces until Peter returns. Although Peter's physical body is still occupied, this strange complication allows Peter's spirit to wield power that could have been handy during their battles with  Gozer or others like Vigo the Carpathian.

Although Peter's power comes in handy, he still wishes to return to the living world and his body despite the fact that the transistion would make him human again. While the essence of superpowers seem like a superb afterlife, its not where Peter Venkman nor his other Ghostbusters deserve to be. While they would eventually return and get their revenge on their famous killers, one could argue that when someone asks you if you're a god, you could say "No...not yet."
