The Umbrella Academy: The Sparrows, Ranked by Intelligence

WARNING! This article contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 3.

With the release of The Umbrella Academy season 3, currently available on Netflix, fans have been curious about the Sparrow Academy and its seven new intriguing members. Among these new characters is former Umbrella member Ben.

Just like their counterparts in the Umbrella Academy, the Sparrows are a diverse group with plenty of interesting new members. Some are clever and ingenious new characters who bring a lot to the table intellectually. Others are a little less competent and need to be dragged along by the other Sparrows.

8 Christopher

Of all the bizarre things in the series, the living cube child Christopher may be the one that makes the least sense in all of Umbrella Academy.

It's clear that Christopher is nothing close to human anymore and that he speaks a language only the other Sparrows can understand. With Christopher's condition, he doesn't seem to be capable of the same level of thought as an average human. Additionally, all his robot language lines seem to be quippy one-liners rather than anything useful based on Sparrow reactions.

7 Alphonso

Alphonso is a man whose face seems to become damaged every time he uses his powers. In this case, Alphonso's power is the ability to reflect the damage that he would take.

Alphonso is one of the middle-ranking members of the Sparrows, and it's hard to see how he earned his ranking. He was fairly useless in the street fight against Diego, apparently unable to use his powers effectively after a certain point in the battle. Among the Sparrows, he seemed to have learned the least about how his powers worked.

6 Jayme

Jayme seemed to be the closest to Alphonso among the Sparrows. She was ranked sixth in the group, having the ability to cause hallucinations.

Since her powers were so straightforward, Jayme's creativity in combat never got to be showcased. In her second fight with the Umbrellas, Jayme couldn't figure out how to get around the strategy of simply blocking her venom. All that is known about her was her low ranking among the Sparrows and her simplistic nature. Jayme also was lost fairly early in the season, so fans never got to see her do much of importance.

5 Luther

While it didn't last long, Luther was actually a Sparrow for a small chunk of the show after his relationship with Sloane began to blossom into something that overtook his loyalty to his family.

Luther is one of the best characters in the comic The Umbrella Academy is based on, but he was never the brightest in either the original comics or the TV series and was often left confused. Luther does have a tiny bit of scientific curiosity in his body and he's clearly attracted to his wife's intelligence, but he's a fairly simple person overall.

4 Fei

The number three of the Sparrow Academy, Fei had the power to see the world through the eyes of crows that she could summon at will. It was a handy power that let her spy and see her fights from a bird's eye view.

Fei was a fairly competent member of the team, but she never actually devised solid plans of her own. Her criticism of Ben as number one seemed hypocritical, as the entire team including herself seemed to be completely cacophonic and scattered without the help of their leader Marcus. Ultimately, Fei's ego was greater than her actual intelligence.

3 Ben

The number two of the Sparrow Academy had the same power as the Umbrella's Ben, whose death was one of the saddest things to happen to the Hargreeves. While the Bens have different personalities, they share the ability to summon eldritch monster tentacles.

Ben was number two in the Sparrows for good reason. Aside from Marcus, he had the best leadership skills and was one of the strongest in the Sparrows. His ability as a leader was diminished more by his inferiority complex than his own abilities. Some of the plans he came up with were solid, disregarding his unnecessary revenge-driven demands over Harlan.

2 Marcus

The number one of the Sparrows was the undisputed leader of the team. Much like Luther, the Umbrella Academy's number one, Marcus's power was super strength and super durability.

While some fans may disregard Marcus due to his early demise, the aftereffects of losing their leader clearly sent the Sparrows into turmoil. He was also smart enough to acknowledge Viktor and have a conversation with him that could have potentially brought peace between the families earlier. If it weren't for the death of Marcus, everything would likely have been resolved much earlier.

1 Sloane

Sloane is number five of the Sparrow Academy and is easily the kindest member of the team. Her power is control over gravity, which she uses creatively throughout the season.

Sloane's knowledge of the kugelblitz and how to fix it impressed every member of the Umbrella and Sparrows, and she's been frequently shown to rival even Five's intelligence in certain topics. The parallel of their numbers is an additional hint to show the audience that Sloane and Five are easily the smartest members of their respective groups.
