X-Men Hellfire Gala Proves Marvel Completely Destroyed Spider-Man & MJ

Warning: Contains spoilers for X-Men: Hellfire Gala#1

Marvel Comics went to great lengths to make sure that Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, and Mary Jane Watson will never be back together, as proved by the X-Men's Hellfire Gala. Both characters attended the premier mutant event on Krakoa, but Spider-Man failed to notice that Mary Jane was in great danger, which makes very little sense considering their past history.

Peter and Mary Jane got married in the comics back in 1987, and they seemed happy enough despite having to deal with the hardships of superhero life, until, twenty years later, Marvel's Editor in Chief Joe Quesada decided that the marriage hurt Spider-Man's longevity as a character. Enter One More Day, one of the most loathed Spider-Man storylines of all time, in which Peter makes a deal with Mephisto to erase public knowledge of his secret identity, in exchange for his marriage. Both Peter and MJ (and the rest of the world) forget they are married, and their relationship soon derails. Fans hated the story but Marvel stuck to it. More recently, Peter and MJ got close once again, but fans' hopes were crushed again when the current Amazing Spider-Man series revealed that Mary Jane is (inexplicably) married with kids.

Spider-Man and Mary Jane are both guests at the X-Men's Hellfire Gala, but rather than being a chance for reconciliation, this events proves to be the nail in the coffin of their relationship. In X-Men: Hellfire Gala#1 (by Gerry Duggan, Kris Anka, Russel Dauterman, Matteo Lolli, CF Villa, Rain Beredo, Frank Martin, Matt Milla, and Matthew Wilson), Peter walks past Mary Jane while she is mind-controlled by Moira X (who has used her body to infiltrate the Gala). MJ is behaving oddly, and she tries to call for help (using Morse code). Peter's Spider-Sense even tingles, but he just ignores the whole thing. Cypher has to actually go to Spider-Man and point out that Mary Jane is visibly in danger to spur the hero into action.

It does not make any sense that Peter would not notice that Mary Jane is in danger, and even outright ignore his Spider-Sense telling him that something is amiss. This woman is the love of his life, he's shared everything her—joy and sadness, triumph and tragedy—across countless timelines and different universes. Even if, in the end, Spider-Man teams up with Wolverine to save MJ from Moira, it does not change the fact that, if not for Cypher, he would not even be aware of the whole situation. This just proves how far Marvel has gone to undo their relationship, and it's a slap in the face of the fans who have been complaining about it for a very long time.

The events of the Hellfire Gala prove that Peter and Mary Jane will not be back together. Marvel loves portraying Spider-Man as a loser, an immature man-child constantly down on his luck. This representation of the character obviously does not allow for a happy marriage, regardless of how frustrated fans get. The X-Men's Hellfire Gala proves that Marvel has completely destroyed Spider-Man and Mary Jane's relationship, and does not intend to go back on this decision anytime soon.
