Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s working title suggests that the MonsterVerse’s highly secretive Titan War will finally be shown. As discussed in Godzilla vs. Kong, the Titan War was an intense, high-stake battle fought between the ancestors of the movie’s two titular monsters. Their ancient feud helped explain the need for each Titan to defeat the other in the movie.
Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending settled their conflict by giving Godzilla a definitive victory. However, what’s known about the MonsterVerse’s future indicates that there’s still more to be done with the two Titans and their shared backstory. It’s recently been confirmed that Legendary Pictures is developing a fifth big-screen MonsterVerse movie. No official title has been announced, but it’s generally understood to be a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong. This description implies the movie will serve as a continuation of both Titans’ MonsterVerse stories, though whether or not they’ll get a proper rematch remains to be seen.
Now that filming for Godzilla vs. Kong 2 has begun, details are beginning to emerge. An image of a clapperboard from the set reveals the movie’s working title is Origins [via CBR], which calls back to the ancient histories of Godzilla and Kong. As noted above, Godzilla vs. Kong mentioned that a Titan War occurred thousands of years ago, but didn’t reveal much else about it. Despite being a precursor to Godzilla and Kong’s battle, the Titan War remains a major MonsterVerse mystery. However, it’s possible that its events will no longer be so ambiguous after Godzilla vs. Kong 2, which could go over it in detail, and perhaps even show a fight from the war with a flashback or the opening sequence.
What can be gleaned from Godzilla vs. Kong in regards to the MonsterVerse's Titan War is that it was a battle that involved more than just two monster species. One particular painting hinted that Mothra and the Skullcrawlers took part in the fighting. As for the outcome, it makes sense that Godzilla’s side triumphed in the end. After all, Kong’s ancestors must have abandoned their Hollow Earth home for a good reason, which is why Godzilla’s species must have driven them out. The movie’s novelization confirms this assumption and goes on to say that the Kongs started the war by launching a preemptive attack on Godzilla, whom they saw as an evil force.
Of course, Godzilla vs. Kong 2 doesn’t have to accept the novelization’s MonsterVerse history lesson as canon and can deliver its own version of what really happened. And with the sequel having a working title like Origins, the movie heading in this direction does make sense. It looks like the MonsterVerse is gearing up to provide some much-needed insight into the Titan War and perhaps what motivated it in the first place. If that’s the case, some unexpected twists, and possibly the inclusion of a hidden third party, might be unveiled as well.
