As we finally move past the doldrums of August, the domestic box office saw a relatively quiet battle play out over the weekend between the re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top Gun: Maverick. Deadline is calling the Web Head king after racking up $7.6M in ticket sales, bringing its total to $812.3M, but Tom Cruise wasn’t far behind with a $7M haul that raised its cume to $700.3M.
Spider-Man sits at No. 3 on the Domestic All-Time Chart in-between Avengers: Endgame ($858M) and Avatar ($760M), while Top Gun is less than $100K away from snatching the No. 5 spot from Black Panther ($700,426,566) — a feat Maverick should accomplish this week.
Worldwide, Top Gun ($1.440B) looks like it will actually blast Frozen II ($1.450B) from its perch at the No. 11 spot. Does Maverick have enough juice to take down Furious 7 ($1.515B) and sneak into the worldwide Top 10?
The only other big box office news this weekend was the rerelease of Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws, which earned $1.23M worldwide from 285 Imax screens. Not too shabby.
