Neon has acquired the North American distribution rights to Anora, the newest film from The Florida Project’s Sean Baker.
Neon announced in a press release that the film production and distribution company has acquired the rights to Anora. The movie, which was filmed earlier this year in Brooklyn, New York, will release in theaters in 2024.
Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Scream), Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuriy Borisov, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan star in the movie, while Baker is producing it with Samantha Quan and Alex Coc.
Plot details for Anora remain under wraps at this time; although, Neon describes the movie as a “romantic dramedy.” Anora was shot in 35mm by Drew Daniels, the film’s director of photography.
What other movies has Sean Baker made?
With Anora marking his eighth feature film, Baker is known for 2015’s Tangerine, 2017’s The Florida Project, and, most recently, 2021’s Red Rocket. Prior to Tangerine, he also directed Starlet in 2012, Prince of Broadway in 2008, Take Out in 2004, and Four Letter Words in 2000.
The Florida Project, which was released by A24, earned Willem Dafoe an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film follows a six-year-old girl, Moonee (Brooklynn Kimberly Prince), and her mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), over the course of the summer as they live in a motel located right next to Walt Disney World.
Worldwide distribution rights for Anora are being handled by FilmNation Entertainment, who previously worked with Baker on Red Rocket.
“Making an independent film is never easy no matter how many you have under your belt!” said Baker, via Variety. “I feel so fortunate to have been given the resources and support to fulfill my vision in an uncompromised way. Thank you to my collaborators including Glen Basner and the FilmNation team, my incredible cast, crew, and producers, and to the city of New York for providing a rich cinematic backdrop for our story. I look forward to sharing this with filmgoers around the world next year.”
Anora will release in theaters in 2024.
