Following the official casting of the DC Universe’s Supergirl yesterday, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has spoken about why he chose House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock for the film.

On Threads, Gunn revealed that Alcock was the first person he spoke about with fellow co-CEO Peter Safran, as she seemed to have the “edge, grace, and authenticity” that would be required for the DCU‘s Supergirl.

“Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics,” reads the post. “I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

What is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow about?

Gunn’s post lines up with the narrative of the comic it will be based on, which he once described:

“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunnof the project. “She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which was illustrated by Bilquis Evely. No director has been set for the upcoming project.
