Paradise Creator on Why He Decided to Kill off [Spoiler]

With the recently released Paradise Episode 4 leaving viewers in shock, series creator Dan Fogelman has come out to explain why he decided to kill off Jon Beavers’ Billy Pace so early on in the show. The show hit the small screens in January 2025 and has premiered four episodes to date. Nevertheless, it has already managed to garner a dedicated fanbase due to its unique setup, tightly-knit plot, and multi-layered characters. However, Pace unexpectedly ends up dying in the fourth chapter, much to the audience’s surprise. Recently, Fogelman addressed fan concerns by shedding light on his motivations to kill off Billy.

Dan Fogelman explains how he decided to kill off Billy in Paradise Episode 4

The renowned screenwriter/producer recently admitted that he did not envision disposing of Jon Beavers’ Billy Pace while conceptualizing the pilot episode of Paradise. Nevertheless, the shock value of killing such a pivotal character ultimately convinced Dan Fogelman to take such a bold step.

While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Only Murders in the Building executive producer stated, “When I wrote the pilot, I just sat down and wrote it and didn’t really know exactly what the twists and turns of it were going to be. And I actually found myself really quickly falling in love with both the character and the actor, and then realizing that the most unexpected thing would be to kill him in the way we were going to. It would be a real shock, because if I can make the audience fall in love with him in that episode, they wouldn’t feel it coming.”

In Paradise Episode 4, Sterling K. Brown’s character, Xavier, learns that his sidekick is hiding a dark secret, and the late president Cal Bradford has himself urged his trusted associates not to trust Billy Pace. Nonetheless, before he can hear the truth from Billy’s mouth, the latter loses his life after consuming poison.
