The Vertigo remake with Robert Downey Jr. has received an exciting update.
It was announced in March 2023 that Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight had been tapped to write the script for a remake of Vertigo. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the original Vertigo movie was released in 1958, stars James Stewart, and is largely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
What is the new update on the Vertigo remake with Robert Downey Jr.?
While there’s been little news about the project since it was announced, Knight was asked by The Direct if it was still in development with Downey Jr.
“It’s swirling around in my head as we speak,” Knight answered.
He continued, “I’m having flashbacks to about an hour ago when I was writing. It’s an interesting—I mean, of course, people consider it the best film ever made. So you’d have to be an idiot to adapt it, and so that’s what I am.
“…But, you know, I like stuff like that. I like it. It’s just so weird to try and do it and just give it a go. Taking that plot apart is like diffusing a second World War time bomb. It’s all over. It’s very complex, but it’s what’s occupying my waking hours.”
According to Deadline’s article from 2023, Downey Jr. is attached to produce the remake alongside Susan Downey, John Davis, and John Fox. The movie is being made for Paramount Pictures, though no release date or potential production window has been announced.
Hitchcock’s Vertigo, meanwhile, is currently available to rent or stream on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
“In San Francisco, an ex-police officer who suffers from an intense fear of heights rescues a mysterious blonde from the bay and must unravel the secrets of the past to find the key to his future,” a description of the original film reads. “The pair become trapped in a dizzying web of mistaken identity, passion, and murder.”
