Lionsgate has announced The Long Walk release date for its upcoming dystopian horror thriller, starring Star Wars vet Mark Hamill as the main antagonist. The film is based on the 1979 novel of the same name written by Stephen King, who first published it under the pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
“The story takes place in the future in which 100 teenage boys embark on an annual competition known as ‘The Long Walk,'” reads the synopsis. “The rules are simple: maintain a speed above 4 miles per hour. Receive three warnings in an hour and you’re shot dead. The last one walking gets whatever he wants for the rest of his life. Under these grim circumstances the boys develop deep friendships despite knowing that each of their friends’ survival is a threat to their own.”
When is The Long Walk release date?
The Long Walk has now been scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 12, 2025, pitting it directly against Focus Features’ Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale at the box office. The movie hails from The Hunger Games franchise director Francis Lawrence, who is directing from a screenplay written by JT Mollner. Besides Hamill, the cast will also feature Judy Greer, Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Garrett Wareing, Roman Griffin Davis, Joshua Odjick, and more.
During Lionsgate’s recent presentation at CinemaCon, Lawrence addressed the coming-of-age theme of the upcoming movie, teasing that the heart of the story will be the friendship between its young characters.
“This is my favorite Stephen King novel, I read it 27 years ago. The rights got bought and then came back up. Roy Lee my producer brought it to me. For me, it was the conceit that was very interesting,” Lawrence said. “You can imagine yourself in the shoes of these young men. World building –the heart of the movie for me is about these young men, their comraderies, the love that forms. This isn’t a try to knock each other out competition, but how we can hold each other up competition.”
