Tom Cruise is a legendary figure in the world of Hollywood, and recently drew some praise from two other legendary filmmakers.
What did Clint Eastwood and Cameron Crowe say about Tom Cruise?
Speaking to The New York Times in a recent profile, Crowe — who worked with Cruise on his films Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky — was asked about the actor. Specifically, whether he believes Cruise’s interests have veered into more blockbuster films instead of the more character-driven films the paire made together.
Crowe didn’t seem to agree, and noted that he believes Cruise is slowly beginning to move back into the realm of character roles. He also then recalled a story where he and fellow director Clint Eastwood had a conversation about how legendary Cruise’s career will be looked at years from now.
“I see that there’s a time coming, and it might have already started, where he’s going to segue into character roles as strongly as he segued into doing action movies of the highest quality,” said Crowe. “That Paul Newman character phase is just around the corner and will fry people’s minds. I’ll tell you one little thing: I have the same lawyer as Clint Eastwood, and he invited me to a dinner party.
“He sat me next to Clint Eastwood, and I was so nervous. What do you say to Clint Eastwood? So I’m sitting there and Clint Eastwood leans over and says, ‘Tom Cruise.’ And I go: ‘Oh, man, Tom Cruise. I love working with Tom Cruise.’ And he goes, ‘In a hundred years, they’re gonna look back — that’s the career, Tom Cruise’s career.'”
Up next for Cruise is a long-rumored horror movie from Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie, two longtime Cruise collaborators. Cruise is also set to star in the highly anticipated next film from The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
