Ethan Hawke has a bonkers idea for a potential Black Phone 3, should the second movie prove to be a hit at the box office.
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ Black Phone 2 is now playing in theaters. The sequel to 2021’s The Black Phone is directed by Scott Derrickson, who co-wrote the script with C. Robert Cargill, and sees Hawke reprise his role as the Grabber. Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw also return as Finney and Gwen Blake.
What did Ethan Hawke say about Black Phone 3?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Hawke revealed an idea he had for a potential Black Phone 3.
“I’ve read other scripts that [Derrickson and Cargill] worked on, even Doctor Strange,” Hawke said. ”Genre’s a great place to play, and every genre is kind of a sequel, in a way, because you’re building off such preexisting expectations. I would like to go to hell with the Grabber. That’s what I’d like to do. I’d like to get to know him. That would be my dream for the third one, to let it be a character piece about what made him, who he is now, and how he’s haunting other people’s dreams.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Phone 2 made $2.6 million in previews on Thursday night and is now tracking to open to around $18 million in North America this weekend, though some are estimating it could come in higher than that. The film only cost around $30 million to produce, and the first movie opened to $23.6 million in the United States before making $161 million globally.
“As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake,” the synopsis for Black Phone 2 reads. “Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, she and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.”
