The fifth season of Stranger Things had its delays due to the pandemic, Hollywood strikes, and The Duffer Brothers taking a little break. In November, you’ll finally get the chance to say goodbye to Hawkins and its beloved residents. If you’re curious what the show’s villain, Vecna, will be like in season 5, Matt Duffer teases he’s “like Freddy on steroids.”

You might argue that the Demogorgon in season 1 feels like child’s play compared to Vecna in season 4. Formerly Dr. Brenner’s test subject, Henry Creel’s massacre at Hawkins Lab led Eleven to banish him to the Upside Down. The dimension’s toxic environment caused him to transform into the disfigured, vine-covered Vecna, who would soon wreak havoc on Hawkins.

Vecna’s plan to access the real world reached its climax when he murdered four trauma victims to open four portals. With Vecna’s return to Hawkins in the season 4 finale, Eleven and her friends face an unprepared enemy.

What can we expect from Vecna?

If you thought Vecna’s powers of bone breaking and eye gouging were scary while he was stuck in the Upside Down, having him make his way to Hawkins will be a whole new nightmare. In his interview with Empire, Matt Duffer teases how much more powerful Stranger Things‘ villain will be in season 5:

“We’ve been calling him Vecna 2.0, because he’s changed,” said Duffer. “He’s stronger and scarier than ever, with new real-world abilities. In Season 4, he was deadly because he could infiltrate your mind and manipulate you in that manner. Now he can kick your ass in truly violent ways, like Freddy on steroids.”

According to Empire, Henry Creel’s character inspiration was Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger. As the Netflix series pays tribute to ’80s films, many similarities exist between Vecna and the metal-clawed antagonist. Both starting as evil beings in their human forms, their transformative, grotesque appearances and psychologically violent powers make them both scary to look at and understand.

With Vecna gaining real-world powers to psychologically and physically defeat you, fans will be in for a wild ride. The first four episodes of Stranger Things’ fifth season premiere on Netflix on November 26th.
