Phil Rosenthal and Ray Romano addressed the possibility of an Everybody Loves Raymond reboot ahead of the show’s 30th anniversary reunion. The series’ creator and star explained why they ruled out reviving the sitcom in a new format. They also shared the reasons for reuniting the cast nearly 30 years after the show’s original debut.

Phil Rosenthal and Ray Romano confirmed there will be no reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond. “Many shows do reboots, and we’ve never wanted to do that,” Rosenthal said, citing the deaths of key cast members Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and Sawyer Sweeten. “We felt like we couldn’t honestly do one since some of the cast isn’t with us anymore,” he added. Romano stated, “Even if every cast member was alive and well, they’re never as good as when the show was thriving… it would almost feel disrespectful to them to even try to do it.”
Romano emphasized, “We don’t want to do it because it would never be as good,” explaining that the absence of key actors would diminish the show’s core dynamic. Rosenthal also pointed to the show’s continued success in syndication. “Because we’re still in syndication… all over the world, the show exists in the form that we took such care in presenting,” he said.
Rosenthal spent ten years trying to get a reunion off the ground and finally succeeded with Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion, airing Nov. 24 on CBS. “I wanted to see my friends and celebrate our nice show,” Rosenthal said. Romano added, “Doing a reunion is something that we want to do… to honor those actors.”
Rosenthal proposed a spinoff centered on Robert and Amy after the series ended, but CBS did not pick it up. “We had a spinoff ready… but CBS didn’t want it,” he said. Romano has no interest in returning to sitcoms, stating, “I don’t know that I would ever want to do a sitcom again.” Rosenthal added, “The itch has never left… but they don’t do too many of these anymore.”
