Following the critical success of the 2021 movie CODA, producers Vendôme Pictures and Pathé are once again teaming up on the upcoming biographical drama Ibelin, based on the real-life story of World of Warcraft player Mats Steen. He was best known for his heroic online persona as Ibelin in the popular online video game. At the age of 25, Steen passed away in 2014 from Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Before the upcoming biopic, Netflix previously released a documentary movie about Steen’s life, titled The Remarkable Life of Ibelin. It highlighted how the beloved gamer inspired many lives despite his physical limitations. Blizzard Entertainment also showed its support for the documentary by implementing a few in-game tributes in honor of Steen’s legacy.
Who is joining the World of Warcraft movie?
The Ibelin movie will be led by Charlie Plummer (The Long Walk), Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Maisy Stella (My Old Ass), and Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs). Acclaimed filmmaker Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) will be directing from a screenplay written by Ilaria Bernardini and Hossein Amini, based on Steen’s blog, “Musings of Life.”
“I–B–E–L–I–N. Six letters. That’s all Mats typed when creating his virtual alter ego — unaware they would come to define his entire world. In the vast digital realm, Ibelin was admired by thousands for his humor, kindness, and courage,” reads the movie’s description. “Behind the screen, Mats was just the same — except for one thing: he lived with a degenerative muscular disease that slowly took away his body, but never his spirit. At home, his loving, funny, slightly chaotic family feared he was withdrawing from the world. But Mats proved them wrong — he wasn’t escaping life. He was redefining it. Ibelin is a celebration of life — tender, funny, and profoundly moving; a heartfelt family story intertwined with an epic adventure that explores the power of friendship and the invisible threads that connect us all.”
The project will be produced by Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi for Vendôme Pictures, alongside Jérôme Seydoux for Pathé, Tyldum, and Guri Neby for Neby-Tyldum AS. Vendôme Pictures and Pathé are also set to finance the movie. Production is expected to begin in Europe in Spring/Summer 2026.
“Ibelin is a sensational story which will be told by a remarkable group of storytellers, first and foremost, Morten, who has a rare ability to evoke emotions with films like The Imitation Game and epics such as Passengers and Silo,” Rousselet said in a statement. “We have assembled a formidable cast, and with our frequent collaborators at Pathé and the team at Black Bear, are confident this will be a film that will resonate with buyers and audiences everywhere.”
