Attention campers: the highly anticipated remake of Robert Hiltzik’s cult classic Sleepaway Camp has just received an exciting update.
It was first announced in September that Kenan Thompson’s AFA will be producing the remake of the 1983 slasher film. Thompson is an actor, comedian, and Saturday Night Live star known for his roles in Heavyweight, Good Burger, and more. It was previously reported that the rights to remake the film were recently acquired by AFA, the production company of Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr.
What is the latest Sleepaway Camp remake update?
On Instagram, AFA posted the first page of the script for the remake, confirming that Hiltzik has officially completed the script. Referencing the iconic line from the film, AFA wrote: “Attention campers, our script has arrived. Please meet us at the waterfront after the social for a table read.” The latest update also revealed that casting announcements will be “coming soon.”

Hiltzik, who wrote and directed the original film, will return to the Sleepaway Camp world to helm the upcoming remake. The writer and director said in a statement shared by Deadline: “I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp. Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family.”
The film follows a series of mysterious murders at a summer youth camp and is infamous for its shocking plot twist. The original movie starred Felissa Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, Christopher Collet, Mike Kellin, Katherine Kamhi, and more.
