The Duffer brothers are shedding new light on the evolving power structure in Stranger Things Season 5, addressing questions around a central character’s connection to Eleven’s abilities. As the season intensifies, their revelations offer a clearer picture of how these powers differ, where they come from, and what they might mean going forward.
Duffer brothers reveal how Will and Eleven’s powers are different
The Duffer brothers explained in a Variety interview that in Stranger Things Season 5, Will’s powers differ fundamentally from Eleven’s. Ross Duffer stated, “It’s different in that he’s able to channel Vecna’s powers,” adding, “the powers aren’t within him.” Ross continued, “He’s able to channel these powers from Vecna and use it, sort of puppeteering.”
Matt Duffer clarified, “He taps into the hive mind, and then he can manipulate anything within the hive.” Unlike Eleven, whose abilities are innate, Will’s powers originate externally through his connection to Vecna’s hive mind.
These powers are dependent on proximity. Matt Duffer said, “If he’s not close to the hive mind, he’s not able to access or tap it,” and confirmed, “Had he not been taken to the Upside Down… never would’ve happened.”
Ross Duffer added, “We’ve been talking about Will having powers for as long as I can really remember.” In Season 2, Will unknowingly accessed a “dark version” of these powers, connected to Vecna’s mind but unable to use them intentionally.
During the climax of Episode 4, Vecna levitates Will and taunts him: “You broke so easily. You showed me what was possible.” When Will recalls personal memories, he unlocks his abilities, halting the Demogorgons and controlling them telepathically. He sees through their eyes and kills them by snapping their limbs. The final shot shows Will wiping his nosebleed, similar to Eleven’s iconic gesture.
To convey this emotional shift, the Duffer brothers added flashback sequences. Ross Duffer said, “It’s such an internal shift for Will, we needed to be able to show that visually.” Matt Duffer explained the use of younger actors over face-replacement due to budget and realism. “It would’ve been extremely expensive, and also look creepy.” They emphasized this arc reflected Will’s growth and self-acceptance.
