Avatar 3 star Sam Worthington isn’t sure if Avatar 4 will end up happening.
20th Century Studios is releasing Avatar 3, also known as Avatar: Fire and Ash, in United States theaters later this month. Directed by James Cameron, the sequel to 2009’s Avatar and 2023’s Avatar: The Way of Water will once again see Worthington reprise his role as Jake Sully, while Zoe Saldaña also returns as Neytiri.
While there were seemingly plans to make Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, Cameron recently said he’s unsure at this point in time if they’ll end up happening.
“I have no doubt in my mind that [Avatar: Fire and Ash] will make money. The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?… I’ve been in Avatar land for 20 years. Actually, 30 years, because I wrote it in 95,” he said on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. “But I wasn’t working continuously on it for those first ten years. There was a brief flurry of interest in ’95, and then everybody said you’re out of your mind, and I shelved it for 10 years. Then, we got serious in 2005. Yeah, absolutely, sure. If this is where it ends, cool.”
What did Avatar 3’s Sam Worthington say about the franchise’s future?
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Worthington said about Avatar 4, “I think Jim’s right; you’re after a movie that your hope is that it connects, and it’s very nerve-racking when you hand a movie over. We’ll see. [His character] Jake Sully said at the end of Avatar 2, ‘This is where we make our stand,’ so I think we know what’s coming. To me, this was always the final battle, the final showdown…I know Jim has ideas for where the saga continues, but I also know that he’s kind of rounded off these two movies; they were one movie when he first wrote it, and I think his intention was to finish this one with everything he’s got and see how it goes.”
Stephen Lang, who plays Miles Quaritch in the Avatar franchise, meanwhile said, “There’s so much more saga to tell, and I know how deeply invested Jim Cameron is in this story and these families that are in this film. I think there can be a break, but we’ve done that before; we’ve taken long breaks. But in the words of a great, great American, we’ll be back.”
Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives on December 19, 2025.
