Following a wave of global fan demand, Netflix has officially announced the renewal of its breakout Japanese reality dating series, Badly in Love, for Season 2. The renewal comes just after the first season’s recent finale.

The dating format, centered on so-called yankiis, young adults shaped by delinquent pasts, became popular after its debut earlier this month. Badly in Love topped Netflix’s charts in Japan for two consecutive weeks and also performed strongly in Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. The series additionally went on to take the No. 8 spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list for non-English-language TV shows.
The series, created by Megumi, places 11 men and women with histories linked to gang culture, violence, and personal difficulties into a secluded academy setting. Over the course of the experiment, participants clash, connect, and explore romantic relationships while confronting their pasts. The premise has resonated with viewers for its unfiltered emotions and focus on vulnerability rather than polished dating-show tropes.
Season 1 happened in an urban environment, but Season 2 will introduce a change in scenery, shifting the setting to the seaside. While the core concept remains the same, the new change is expected to cultivate fresh dynamics as a new group of participants navigates relationships and issues. The show is hosted by Megumi alongside rapper AK-69 and comedian Nagano.
Reacting to Badly in Love Season 2 renewal, Megumi said, “I’m truly delighted that Season 2 has been greenlit so quickly.
