It: Welcome to Derry Episode 8’s ending explained
At the start of Episode 8, Pennywise takes the kids and heads to the ancient tree at the end of his cage, as the town is covered in dense fog. Lilly, Ronnie, and Marge go after him to save Will. Other adults leverage Dick Hallorann’s powers to find Pennywise. Rose comes up with an idea to stop Pennywise, revealing that the only way is to put the magical dagger beneath the tree and complete the cage that will trap him eventually.
Dick distracts Pennywise for some time in an attempt to rescue Will and Marge. Amid the chaos, Shaw’s troops arrive to stop the adults, with an intent on letting Pennywise escape. Leroy steps in to keep the soldiers away, allowing the kids to reach the tree. However, as Leroy and the other adults clash with the military, Pennywise breaks free and gets behind the kids. With no hope left of stopping Pennywise, a miracle occurs: the spirit of Sesqui sends Rich Santos’ ghost to aid his friends.
With Rich’s help, they are then able to bury the dagger and trap Pennywise. Later, Rich comes to his own funeral, providing comfort to his parents. He also motivates Dick to use his powers for a good cause. In the end, Dick departs the military and starts a new chapter in London as a chef. Meanwhile, it seems Pennywise is trapped but not gone forever.
