A formerly announced heist thriller is now officially looking for funding ahead of its eventual release, and has added a star-studded cast led by Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and more.
What heist movie has added to its cast?
According to a new report from Deadline, a movie based on Richard Lange’s 2017 novel The Smack is in the works. Concourse Media has boarded worldwide sales rights ahead of the European Film Market, where the film will look to secure funding.
Alongside Affleck and Rockwell, The Smack will also star Kathy Bates and Marisa Tomei. The movie follows the story of “a down-on-his-luck conman (Affleck) who teams up with a casino waitress to execute a high-stakes con targeting a hidden cache of stolen U.S. military cash. What starts off as an easy plan spirals into a deadly game of as they collide with dangerous criminals chasing the same score,” according to the film’s description.
David M. Rosenthal (The Perfect Guy) is set to direct the feature. According to Deadline, the movie is looking to begin filming in New Jersey later this year. The Smack had been previously announced a few years ago with a different cast, but hadn’t made much ground in terms of funding at the time. Now, though, it seems like the movie is moving forward.
Casey Affleck was last seen in 2024’s The Instigators and Slingshot. Rockwell’s lone 2025 film credit includes a voice role in The Bad Guys 2, but he also appeared in four episodes of the third season of The White Lotus. Tomei’s last role came in 2024’s Brothers, High Tide, and Upgraded, with the star set to appear in the upcoming films You’re Dating a Narcissist!, The Mongoose, and F*ck Valentine’s Day.
