Ryan Coogler‘s highly anticipated The X-Files reboot has finally received a pilot order from Hulu, nearly three years after the acclaimed filmmaker first started developing the project. In addition, Coogler has also found one of the leading stars of the upcoming sci-fi drama, as well as its showrunner.

“The reboot follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena,” reads the show’s initial logline.

Who is leading Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot show?

According to Deadline, BAFTA nominee Danielle Deadwyler (Till, 40 Acres) has officially been tapped to play one of the leading roles in Hulu’s The X-Files reboot. This marks Deadwyler’s first major TV project as the co-lead, after previously starring in Paradise Lost, P-Valley, Station Eleven, and From Scratch. She also had a one-episode guest appearance in last year’s The Bear Season 4. Besides the new sci-fi show, Deadwyler will also next be seen in HBO’s upcoming Steve Carell comedy show, Rooster, and in Euphoria Season 3.

Coogler has also enlisted Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) to serve as the reboot’s showrunner and executive producer. The upcoming pilot will be written and directed by Coogler, based on the original show created by Chris Carter. It is part of the Sinners director’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney. The show will also be executive-produced by The Black Panther director, Sex Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, Simone Harris, and Carter. It is a production by Proximity Media, Onyx Collective, and 20th Television.

The original show lasted for nine seasons on Fox from 1993 to 2002. Seasons 10 and 11 subsequently came out in 2016 and 2018. It centered around two FBI special agents who are tasked to investigate the unexplained and mind-bending cases. The original cast was led by David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, Robert Patrick as John Doggett, Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, William B. Davis as Cigarette Smoking Man, and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner.
