The production team behind the wildly successful live-action One Piece adaptation on Netflix is partnering up with another anime legend for a new adaptation.
What anime is being adapted next?
According to a new report from Variety, Tomorrow Studios is in the process of developing a live-action adaptation of the anime Samurai Champloo, with original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe attached to the project.
Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, who helped build up Tomorrow Studios into the premier destination for anime adaptations, told Variety that they approached Watanabe with the idea, and wanted him to be involved with it.
“We had dinner with [Watanabe] in Japan and said, if we move forward on doing ‘Samurai Champloo,’ we really want you to be a part of the creative,” Clements said. “We were thrilled that he was willing to do that.”
As of now, the project is still in early development, so no real news on when or even where it will appear has been revealed. Clements did say that they’d already received “a lot of incoming calls” about the property, though, and that it will retain the core elements of the original show, with music being central to the process of the live-action show.
Tomorrow Studios is no stranger to working with Watanabe. The studio also developed his other legendary work, Cowboy Bebop, into a Netflix series in 2021. That series was canceled after one season and received mostly negative reviews, although Adelstein says that Watanabe was not as involved with it as he would be this time around, and they now see how important that is.
“We’ve learned,” said Adelstein. “Having the creator there to bless the creative is really important.”
Originally debuting in 2004, Samurai Champloo is set in a fictionalized version of Japan’s Edo period. The series follows the story of tea waitress Fuu, vagrant outlaw Mugen, and ronin Jin. The series became massively popular due to its blending of both traditional and modern elements. The show would often incorporate hip hop music into its scenes, and feature various cultural references as well.
