What a wonderful surprise Scott Pilgrim Takes Off wound up being. Originally advertised as an animated retelling of the graphic novels, it wound up being a time-travel-based sequel with Scott encountering an older version of himself. Gorgeously animated and filled with some bold choices, it was great to revisit the Netflix series with the new Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Blu-ray release.

“Based on the cult classic live-action film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Scott Pilgrim returns in an 8-part animated series. The original film cast (including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, and Anna Kendrick) reprise their roles in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: The Complete Limited Series. Scott meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, this is Scott Pilgrim like you’ve never seen before,” says the official description.

Since a lot of the initial enjoyment in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was with the wild twist and how it subverted expectations, I was curious how it held up upon a rewatch. Thankfully, the series’ alternate take is more than just a twist, and the solid writing underneath really shines on a rewatch. One of the coolest elements about the show is that the cast of the live-action returned, so it’s really an embarrassment of riches (even though a few of the live-action stars clearly aren’t used to voice acting and come across a bit stiff). Wonderfully animated, the eight-episode series works well as a binge watch as well, as it’s a self-contained story.

Since the series is just 3 hours and 26 minutes long, it all fits on a single 50-GB Blu-ray disc. The colors really pop, and you can really appreciate the animation detail here as there’s no streaming compression. The series’ great soundtrack and audio mixing also shine here with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

One really nice touch is that the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Blu-ray also includes creator commentary tracks for each episode. Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski give a lot of insight into their creative choices, and the tracks wind up being a fun listen. There’s also a Japanese audio track included, in case you really want it to feel like an anime.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

Escaping Netflix, the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Blu-ray is the best way to enjoy the series. Featuring an all-star voice cast and an interesting story that goes far beyond what one would expect, the Scott Pilgrim TV show is worth revisiting and owning. It also helps that there are meaningful bonus features thanks to a series of commentary tracks.
