Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi film just shattered early box office predictions while a surprise horror hit quietly toppled a genre giant. Disclosure Day and Obsession both made major waves at this weekend’s box office in very different ways.
Disclosure Day leads the weekend, gets in way more than early predictions
Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day opened at number one this weekend, according to Deadline. Focus Features’ Obsession also continued its historic theatrical run alongside the new release.
Early tracking projected Disclosure Day to earn around $35 million at the domestic box office. However, the Universal and Amblin production significantly outperformed those estimates. The film ultimately earned $44 million domestically across 3,824 theaters in its opening weekend. Worldwide, Disclosure Day collected an impressive $92.9 million from 73 offshore territories.
Half of that domestic total came from Imax and premium large format screenings. Spielberg himself was the biggest draw, with 55% of audiences citing him as their primary reason for buying tickets. Close to 40% of the audience skewed over 45, while Millennials aged 25 to 34 made up 24%. The film’s CinemaScore landed at a B, and PostTrak exits showed a 61% definite recommend rating.
Obsession beats one of the most profitable horror movies, Get Out
The Curry Barker-directed Obsession earned $19 million in its fifth weekend at the domestic box office. That result pushed its domestic total to $188.3 million, officially surpassing Blumhouse’s Get Out, which earned $176.1 million domestically. Get Out was famously produced on a budget of just $4.5 million and became one of the most profitable horror films ever made.
Obsession’s worldwide total now stands at $286.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The film has remarkably posted four weekends above $20 million outside its opening frame. Deadline compared this trajectory to The Sixth Sense, which similarly achieved five consecutive $20 million-plus weekends during its 1999 summer run.
