A cult musical comedy movie is being revived by Wicked producer Marc Platt and Sony Pictures. This early-2000s film was originally adapted from a popular Archie Comics series.

What beloved comedy movie are Marc Platt and Sony reviving?

The musical comedy movie Josie and the Pussycats, which was initially released in 2001, will be remade by Marc Platt and Sony Pictures, according to a recent report by insider Jeff Sneider.

A new Josie and the Pussycats movie is reportedly in development, thanks to Platt and Sony’s efforts, who acquired the rights for the original, following a long battle with Archie Comics. Now, it’s revealed that the Wicked producer and Sony managed to close a successful deal with Archie Comics boss Jon Goldwater.

It has come to light that it was Sony’s Maia Eyre who had been working to acquire the rights for Josie and the Pussycats. However, the deal happened only after Platt came into the picture as Archie Comics boss Goldwater wanted him to be part of the reboot movie. This likely reflects Platt’s recent success as a producer on the Wicked films.

The first film, released in 2024, went on to make over $750 million at the global box office while its sequel, Wicked: For Good, released last year, earned more than $540 million worldwide. Combined, both the movies made over $1 billion.

Interestingly, Platt was also involved in the original Josie and the Pussycats comedy movie. However, it failed to make an impact at the box office. Made on a budget of $22 million, it earned just $14 million globally and was a flop. It also didn’t resonate with critics and audience, with a poor Tomatometer score of 54% and a Popcornmeter score of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, the comedy movie managed to earn cult status in subsequent years. As for the reboot, there are no details available at the moment on whether it will be a sequel or a fresh retelling of the original.
