Another hit YouTube horror series is getting a film adaptation from Steven Spielberg and Amazon. It seems the YouTube-to-movie trend is going to continue following the recent success of Backrooms.
What YouTube series is Steven Spielberg turning into a horror movie?
Steven Spielberg is partnering with Amazon MGM Studios to develop a horror movie based on the viral YouTube series, The Mandela Catalogue, reports Deadline. It’s a horror franchise created by YouTuber Alex Kister.
Reports also suggest that Kister will direct the live-action adaptation of The Mandela Catalogue. It will be based on a screenplay he adapted alongside Tyler Clifton.
So far, The Mandela Catalogue series, which currently spans two seasons, has amassed more than 100 million views through its episodes. Launched in 2021, it’s turned into one of the biggest analog horror franchises on YouTube. It is also regarded as one of the defining titles in the genre of analog horror, along with Local 58 and The Backrooms.
The series is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, which gets invaded by creepy, shape-shifting creatures known as Alternates. They are led by a false depiction of the Archangel Gabriel. Their goal is to drive humans to suicide through psychological torment. In the web series, the Alternates are capable of manipulating computers, TVs, and GPS systems.
The latest news of The Mandela Catalogue turning into a movie further highlights the impact films like Backrooms and Obsession have made in 2026. These two blockbusters are also made by YouTuber-turned-directors, namely Kane Parsons and Curry Barker.
Alex Kister is now set to follow a similar path with his own project, backed by Spielberg. The Disclosure Day director will serve as the producer on The Mandela Catalogue, alongside Aaron B. Koontz and Nick Nesbitt. Kister and Clifton will also produce the film.
The Mandela Catalogue horror movie has yet to receive an official release date window.
