The future of Barbie 2 is unclear after talks between Warner Bros. and its creative team stalled. Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig, and Noah Baumbach reportedly need new agreements before the sequel can move ahead.
According to The New York Times, Warner Bros. film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have roughly four months to place another Barbie movie into active development. If the required contracts are not completed, rights connected to Gerwig’s film could return to Mattel.
Gerwig and Baumbach already have an idea for the proposed sequel. However, the writers are reportedly holding back the concept until their contracts with Warner Bros. are finalized. The project cannot enter full development without agreements involving the filmmakers and returning stars.
What the Barbie 2 timeline could mean for a possible release date
The reported deadline would arrive around December 2026. If the necessary deals are not signed by then, Barbie 2 will likely not continue with the current creative team. Mattel could then pursue a separate reboot without using Gerwig’s characters, story, or creative direction.
If the contracts are completed before the deadline, the sequel would enter active development. The filmmakers would need to complete the script, organize production, and confirm the cast. Based on that schedule, filming could begin in late 2027.
A 2028 theatrical release would then become possible. However, Warner Bros. has not announced a shooting date or official release window. The projected timing depends entirely on the negotiations and the speed of the development process.
The stalled sequel follows a major dispute over compensation. The original contracts reportedly did not include sequel obligations, leaving the studio to negotiate new terms with the main creative team. The New York Times reported that Gosling could seek $20 million to return as Ken.
The first Barbie movie was released in 2023 with Robbie as Barbie and Gosling as Ken. Gerwig directed the film and co-wrote it with Baumbach. The movie earned more than $1.4 billion worldwide and became Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing release at the time. That success created strong expectations for a follow-up.
