Lionsgate has announced the 4K release date for Battle Royale, the iconic Japanese dystopian action movie from acclaimed filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku. Since it was released in 2000, the controversial movie has maintained its Certified Fresh score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“In the near future, the economy has collapsed, unemployment has soared, and juvenile crime has exploded. Fearful of their nation’s youth, the Japanese government passes The BR Law: Each year, a 9th-grade class is sent to a remote island where they will be locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon, and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left,” reads the official synopsis. “Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) and screen legend Takeshi Kitano (Ghost in the Shell) star in the movie that has been argued, acclaimed, and banned around the world.”
When is the Battle Royale 4K release date?
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Battle Royale will finally be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD (+ Blu-ray and Digital) Steelbook, starting on December 9, 2025, for the suggested retail price of $49.99. On the same day, Lionsgate will also be releasing a 4K Steelbook and t-shirt bundle for the retail price of $74.99.
Kinji Fukasaku directed the 2000 movie from a screenplay written by his son Kenta Fukasaku. It was based on the 1999 novel by Koushun Takami. The movie starred Tatsuya Fujiwara (Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler, Death Note), Aki Maeda (The Cat Returns), Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill), Tarô Yamamoto (Get Up!, Moon Child), and Takashi Tsukamoto Outrage, Midnight Sun). Producers were Akio Kamatani, Tetsu Kayama, Masumi Okada, Masao Sato, Kenta Fukasaku, Kinji Fukasaku, Kimio Kataoka, Toshio Nabeshima, and Chie Kobayashi.
