James Gunn has addressed some recent matters concerning the DCU Batman movie.
Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU officially kicked off at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures in December 2024 with Creature Commandos. That was followed by Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, while Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface are all being released this year.
Just recently, it was announced that Christina Hodson had been tapped to work on the script for the announced DCU Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold. This was met with some criticism from some people online, particularly because Hodson wrote the screenplay for 2023’s The Flash, a DCEU movie that was not received well.
What did James Gunn say about Batman and The Brave and the Bold?
On Threads, Gunn wrote, “I will only say anyone maligning Christina Hodson’s screenwriting skills has almost certainly never read an actual screenplay by Christina Hodson – she’s one of the writers who was with us early in the DCU planning stages. I don’t think you can judge my writing based on films others directed, as massive liberties are sometimes taken.”
Gunn was also asked about some recent reports regarding The Brave and the Bold; specifically, if it’s true that the movie could be released at some point in 2027, 2028, or 2029.
The Superman director didn’t directly answer the question; rather, he simply said, “The universe is rife with incorrect information about the Brave and the Bold on every level.”
What that means going forward for The Brave and the Bold is unclear. The movie is still in pre-development, and director Andy Muschietti appears to be attached to the project, though The Hollywood Reporter said Muschietti’s ultimate involvement could depend on “several factors, including timing and availability.” Whether or not this is also “incorrect information” that Gunn was including in his statement is unclear.
A release date for The Brave and the Bold has not been announced.
