The search for the next Dark Lord continues as HBO’s Harry Potter television adaptation moves forward. While a new trio of young wizards has been announced, one crucial throne in the Wizarding World remains empty. Ralph Fiennes, who defined the role of Voldemort across the original film franchise, has now weighed in on who should inherit the wand and the lack of a nose.

Ralph Fiennes on potential return as Voldemort and preferred casting choice

Fiennes has officially closed the door on a potential return to the role that haunted a generation of moviegoers. Appearing on BBC’s The Claudia Winkleman Show, the acclaimed actor addressed long-standing speculation about whether he would reprise his part as Tom Riddle for the new HBO series.

“I remember being asked the question ‘would I reprise the part?’ This was some years ago. And I said: ‘Yes, I’d love to,'” Fiennes explained. However, the actor acknowledged that with production moving ahead and no contact from the studio, the opportunity appears to have vanished. “Nothing’s happened,” he stated, adding, “I think that ship has sailed.”

With Ralph Fiennes stepping aside, attention now shifts to the empty casting slot. HBO boss Casey Bloys recently told Variety that the role of Voldemort remains unconfirmed, despite a swirl of internet rumors linking major stars like Cillian Murphy to the part. Murphy himself has already shot down the chatter, telling on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, “I don’t know anything about that. I mean, also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does.”

Instead, Fiennes offered his own endorsement for a candidate whose name has been whispered in Harry Potter fan circles: Tilda Swinton. When asked about the possibility of the Oscar-winning actress taking on the Dark Lord, Fiennes shared she would be “fantastic.”

Swinton’s otherworldly aura and transformative abilities make her a compelling choice for the gender-swapped speculation, though HBO’s Bloys has urged fans to avoid believing any casting rumors until official announcements are made.

The new Harry Potter series is releasing on HBO Max on Christmas 2026.
