The minds behind 24 Jump Street have revealed the reason for the sequel’s unusual title. The third film in the Jump Street franchise will reunite Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube.
Why is the 24 Jump Street title skipping 23?
Fans were expecting the third film to be titled 23 Jump Street, which was jokingly teased during the second film’s end-credits sequence. However, filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed the first two films, have revealed the hilarious reason behind the name of the new film.
“We developed a ’23 Jump Street,’ and I think this is just out of respect for that,” Lord told Empire magazine. “We’re calling this 24, out of respect for the dead. There was a script that was made years ago. And the dust has been blown off of it, and it’s being rewritten right now,” said Miller. The announcement included an image of the script with the text, “It took so long we had to skip one” on the title page.

Rodney Rothman will direct 24 Jump Street. Rothman, who co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is also revising the script for the new Jump Street film. The end credits sequence in 22 Jump Street teased a fictional version of its sequel, titled 23 Jump Street: Medical School. The gag continued by teasing multiple other sequels, including 24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange Students, showing the lead heroes going undercover in Russia.
The odd title for the third film doesn’t rule out a potential 21 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover. Years ago, Sony planned a crossover between the franchises, but the project never materialized. Titled MIB 23, the film was canceled. A third film has been in various stages of development for over a decade.
24 Jump Street currently doesn’t have a release date. The film is being written by Rothman, Hill, and Meghan Malloy.
