The next DC Universe entry, Clayface, had some elements removed from director-writer Mike Flanagan’s original script. Director James Watkins has now started to talk more about DC Studios’ first horror film, revealing more details about how the villain will be brought to screen. The project was not originally a part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for their cinematic universe.
What did Clayface’s director say about Mike Flanagan’s original script?
While Mike Flanagan wrote the original script for the new DCU movie, it was later rewritten by screenwriter-director Hossein Amini. Speaking about what the original Clayface script looked like before Amini came on board, Watkins told Entertainment Weekly, “There were mythic things within the shape-shifting world of him. Questions of our humanity — how we lose our humanity and what it means to be a monster.”
Removing Clayface’s more mythical elements to ground it in the DCU is a notable choice. When James Gunn started the new DCU with Superman, it laid the groundwork for many high-fantasy elements. This included over 300 years of in-universe history with metahuman, space-faring superheroes like the Green Lantern Corps., and more intergalactic world-building as seen in this year’s Supergirl.
The upcoming film will introduce audiences to the Gotham City of the DCU, which stands separately from Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe. The film will follow Matt Hagen, an actor who obtains disturbing shape-shifting powers.
Recent rumors have also started to tease how Batman will factor into Clayface. The film will reportedly take inspiration from one of the most celebrated episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. To that end, DC Studios may have already cast its Batman actor. Regardless of the rumor, DC has multiple Batman-related projects in the works.
Besides Tom Rhys Harries, the film recently added a Breaking Bad star in a mystery role to its cast. After Supergirl’s underwhelming critical reception, the upcoming Clayface may dictate the future of the DCU.
Clayface will release in theaters on October 23, 2026.
