Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is about to make box office history by claiming a record no R-rated movie has ever touched. The epic is closing in on a milestone that would dethrone Deadpool & Wolverine from its all-time throne.
The Odyssey set to beat Deadpool & Wolverine for highest grossing R-Rated movie
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is now on track to dethrone Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. The Universal Pictures epic has earned $1.29 billion worldwide through its first 31 days of theatrical release, according to Box Office Mojo. It currently trails Deadpool & Wolverine’s $1.34 billion global total by approximately $47 million, a gap that narrows daily.
The film opened to $123.5 million domestically across 3,919 theaters during its debut weekend beginning July 17, 2026. Its domestic total now stands at $504.7 million, while its international haul has reached $786.2 million across all global markets. The international split accounts for 60.9% of its worldwide gross, indicating particularly strong audience demand outside North America.
Deadpool & Wolverine earned $636.7 million domestically and $701.3 million internationally across all markets during its full 2024 theatrical run (via Box Office Mojo). Walt Disney Studios distributed the Marvel sequel, which carried a reported combined production and marketing budget of $537 million. By contrast, The Odyssey cost a reported $250 million to produce, making its overall path to profitability significantly shorter.
The R-rated epic runs two hours and 52 minutes and has held the top two spots domestically every day since its July 17 opening. It expanded to 3,942 theaters at its widest release and sustained strong daily holds throughout its run.
The Odyssey earned an estimated $23.2 million during its fifth domestic weekend across 3,217 theaters. Deadpool & Wolverine leaned heavily on its domestic performance, which made up 47.6% of its worldwide total. The Odyssey’s stronger international skew at 60.9% gives it a wider runway to close the gap and claim the all-time R-rated box office record.
