Tramell Tillman has teased what’s next for his Spider-Man 4 character after facing Jean Grey. The actor played William Metzger, head of the Department of Damage Control, in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, led by Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
In an interview with Polygon, Tillman discussed what Metzger might be up to right now, following a near-fatal confrontation with Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey toward the end of the movie. “He’s on the apology tour,” the actor laughed. Giving a realistic response, however, he added, “I don’t know. Probably taking a vacation. He encountered some pretty heavy stuff.”
In the climax, Jean Grey had Metzer trapped in her telepathic powers, with sharp mirror pieces pointed right at his face. However, Peter eventually arrived before she was about to kill him and avenge her sister’s death. “I remember having this conversation with [director] Destin [Daniel Cretton] and Justin [Kuritzkes], the writer that I was working with. We were talking about what it would be like to experience power like Jean Grey. And as a result of the experimentation that he was doing on Jean, it intensified. Metzger got a front row seat to experience that.”
Tillman suggested that Metzger might be hiding somewhere following his near-death encounter. “The glass was right in his eyes. He probably thought he was going to die.”

While his character was portrayed as villainous by the end of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tramell Tillman noted that Metzger’s motives were justified.
“I think what he did was motivated by his desire to protect the people he served,” he said while empathizing with Metzger. “He knew there was a threat out there, and it’s a very dangerous threat, and he needed to get to the bottom of it. He’s the type of person to do what he needs to do in order to protect or preserve the greater good. He did what he needed to do to protect people.”
In the comics, Bill Metzger is an anti-mutant activist and hates the superpowered individuals. Brand New Day also established this fact by showing the character’s aversion to mutants and his cruel experiments to use their powers for his own selfish goals.
Brand New Day’s ensemble cast also features Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher. Other key members include Michael Mando, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III.
Spider-Man 4 is now playing in theaters. The film has been on a record-breaking streak at the box office since its debut last month.
It has become the second-highest-grossing movie of all time in North America. With a collection of $858.4 million, it now only trails 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ milestone of $936.6 million.
